The first time I heard Aunt pronounced ant,
I couldn't understand what had just been said.
I remember shooting my mother a look of puzzlement.
She laughed.

And here's another:
my grandmother rhymed aunt and can't (pronounced caunt).
And she elided the s in wasn't.
Wasn't is pronounced the same as want.
Waunt.

She had a very old vocabulary.
Like Shakespeare, she used the word vaunt.
