Thank you, Marion! The years of a build up to the schism, as early as 1980
with Bishop Fitz Allison's election. Then onto to the 1992 Evangelism
conference at Kanuga when the African Primates came and told those gathered
something like, "You (TEC) have done quite enough evangelizing of the
'global south;' "now it's our turn to evangelize The Episcopal Church,
etc." Then in South Carolina, Mark Lawrence was elected Bishop in 2006 and
co-opted most of the diocese into a movement to leave TEC, as Pittsburg,
San Joaquin, Ft. Worth, had already done. From my seat, after the actual
split in South Carolina, the reorganization of the diocese and also
Episcopal communities that had been left to fend for themselves with regard
to establishing new churches. This is what led to Good Shepherd's
creation. We grew from 7 people meeting on the afternoon Bp. Lawrence's
letter saying he had left the Episcopal Church and the diocese was no
longer part of the Episcopal Church. Quickly we grew to 20-30 people. You
may remember that this group asked me to serve as senior warden, and I have
to say that job was easy and a thing of joy. I served until 2015. Good
Shepherd is a healthy church and we have a wonderful future before us. Our
motto is (and we sincerely mean it) is "All are welcome. All are valued.
All are loved."
