[Magdalen] Audio help redux

Friends, I know I made this same request not too long ago, but most of my
gmail messages have disappeared, and I can't find nor remember the answer.
Once again, I have no sound on my laptop; it's permanently in the Mute
position. Last time this happened, someone on this list told me the steps
to take, and they worked. When I go to what purports to be audio help, they
assume I'm talking about some external audio device and tell me there isn't
one attached. But there's nothing about the laptop audio itself.

If someone can give me the solution again, I promise I'll write it down
this time!
