Up here in Port Hope on the north shore of L. Ontario, it was firmly
overcast. At the appointed hour, I was outside my house in the ravine in
my warm coat and gloves, gawking up at where the sun would have been if it
were clear.. The usual crowd of chirping goldfinches sensing change left
the feeders and gathered high in nearby tall trees where they chattered up
a storm, remarkable for its volume. The darkness deepened and they fell
silent. There wasn't a sound!. It was so dark, an odd unrelieved
darkness, and cold. Outdoor lights came on here and there. And then
suddenly it was becoming light again. Maybe I didn't see the main feature,
but my experience was memorable
