Well, I saw it for the first time when I was about 11. I knew she was a woman, but I also remember how perfect she looked for the part--she had a real gamin-like face and a pixie haircut.
Now, I don't especially like to see Amahl played by a girl, but that's mostly because I know it wouldn't be that hard to find a boy soprano!
