Kindle - can put photos onto it via a USB to a computer, as long as
the computer allows you to see the Kindle (mine do). I've backed up
most of my Kindle on the computer as well. It shows up as an external
hard drive - just explore where photos go. It's just a low-level form
of ?Linux? for the OS.
iPhone 5 & updating - mine's up to iOS 8.1.1 with no problems. There
are unspecified problems if you get close to the storage limit, and
having the old+new OS on it may have hit the limit. It's very useful
to remember the top+front button reset method. It's also very useful
to have the iPhone backed up to a computer. I also back mine up to
iCloud. I haven't been at all impressed with the 'new' iCloud - it's
clunky & useful for such a very few things. Nevertheless ... backups
are extremely useful to have. Not to mention keeping my mac mini /
iPad mini / iPhone in sync.
DropBox - use it for daily backups for most of my computer files AND
for sharing amongst the cave photographers (electronic submissions for
the annual competition) and church documents (audits, region reports,
vestry minutes, etc.). Very handy. I find it most useful since I can
store any type of file in any format. (Not true for iCloud any more or
yet - as in, it used to work that way & may work that way in the
future, but is truly limited to backups and Apple(r) app files for
now. Sillies.)
Google Drive - also use it for a few things. Also useful for sharing,
has basic security. Has an interesting "live collaboration" feature
that can be a bit mind-bending if you work at it.
Other than that - nothing but several backup drives...
analog hugs anyway - Cady
