This morning was the morning I was to take my dear friend to the Oakland airport (a slightly renovated, semi-circular terminal, 1960s place; I just love it), and it indeed did happen.  I can only describe the experience as positively delightful.  Our interaction was little more than our phone calls are, except that the "little more" involved face-to-face visuals and a couple hugs I never in my wildest dreams ever thought I'd get.  We promised to talk whilst she's in New Hampshire (though visiting children and grandchildren, she'll be pulling her hair out soon enough to get back to familiar life), and if she doesn't get delayed too much we'll meet up again at baggage claim on Thursday night.
