A quick Google shows that was the year that the last restrictions on the 
use of the net by commercial, as opposed to academic, institutions were 
removed with the winding up of the NSFNET Project.  Various protocols to 
allow its development had been formulated in the preceding years.  It's 
incredible to think that is less than 20 years ago when you consider the 
communication network we now take for granted.

I was computerized (but obviously not connected) about 15 years before 
then as I recall using my Dragon 32 (32KB RAM) connected to a dot matrix 
printer to cut wax stencils for a service booklet in 1980.  How things 
have changed!
