My late husband (then the Systems Manager for our local University
computer) and I came to the States in early 1979. In Boston at Digital
Computers, he said, he saw the beginnings of a new era with the
changes that were already taking place regarding communications
between computers. At that stage, communication between computers was
rudimentary. (i.e. send the tape or floppy disk through the
mail/courier.) It's always been a source of mixed pride and sadness to
me that he died before he actually saw USENET in operation although he
understood its potential.
