Maybe -- maybe not. Some of us are old enough to remember the popular study of 
Esperanto as a world-wide common language.

But some very smart folk suggested that Finnish would be a much better choice --  
a modern, living  language (unlike the made-up Esperanto) capable of handling 
science, technology, math as well as pretty clear grammar rules -- and spoken by 
a small number of people so the rest of the world would be on an even par.

I suppose English has become the common language by default (thanks to the 
internet?).
