Merry  Christmas and Happy New Year !


 
It will be a quiet holiday for us here in  the Pennsylvania Poconos.
 
We've watched some special concerts on PBS -  We've heard the Messiah
"Halleluia" chorus three times  already.
 
The most interesting to me was the famed Saint  Olaf (Lutheran College)
Choir in concert in Nidarosdom (Saint Olaf's  Cathedral) the Metropolitan
Church of Norway.  They joined with a  childrens' and an adult choir from
the Cathedral for much of the concert.   

Since this was the congregation
to which my Trondheim ancestors belonged I was  riveted throughout
the concert which featured the choirs and  audience singing that most
popular of Norwegian Christmas carols, "Jeg ar so  Glad" (I am so glad)
and the conclusion was the familiar F.  Melius Christiansen "Beautiful
Savior", with the alto solo verse sung in  Norwegian by the children's
choir.
 
The Cathedral, heavily remodeled during the 19th  century, is quite
resplendent with some lovely stained glass.   There is a very large
pipe organ that was not used in this mostly a  capella concert.
 
In all of these concerts with singers at the  college level, there was the
somewhat puerile quality of the young tenors and  basses.  None of 
the choir young men had that "honking" sound so  commonly found in
high school age male singers, but there was still  some of it present.  
With the female voices this is less of a problem  because the womens'
voices mature earlier.  Still, there is  quite a different sound from a
choir of adult male and female singers.  Of  course, adult singers run
into their whole different vocal problems, so at  times "you just can't 
win".
 
But I am too picky for Christmas.
 
I have my Eucharistic minister coming by tomorrow  morning with the
Blessed Sacrament, so all and all it's a nice  holiday, even though 
Christmas isn't the same  as it was, say, twenty years ago.
OTOH, I had a traditional fish dinner (salmon)  this evening, to be followed
by Cornish hens and all the trimmings  tomorrow.  There are advantages
in being a married man!
