There are, of course, fog horns on the Great Lakes.  I spent a lot  of
time with relatives in the Superior-Duluth area, and I recall  the haunting 
sound
in the summer when the windows were open, of the continuous wail of  steam
locomotives, especially during the WW-2 years, punctuated by the  low 
honking of
the fog horns down at the harbor.
