I lost a dear friend about a year ago who had enlisted in the US Navy
during the Viet Nam War, and was stationed on a heavy cruiser bombarding
the coast of North Viet Nam. He had an epiphany one day when he realized
that those shells were actually hitting and killing real people. It was
one thing
seeing the big guns blast away on board, but quite another to be on the
receiving end on shore.

He immediately claimed "conscientious objector" status, left the Navy and
joined in the radical peace movement. When the war was over, he became
an Anglican Franciscan monk. He was stationed for years at the San Damiano
Priory, SF, and the Bishop's Ranch (run then by the Franciscans) in the
Napa
Valley.

He left the Order after about ten years, and lived in Seattle. He called
me
to bid farewell because he had been diagnosed with inoperable/non-treatable
liver cancer, and died a couple of months later.

He was widely respected in the Diocese of Olympia, and a full choir and
two bishops were present at his funeral. Steve (Hartwell) was a great
guy, and a fellow Wisconsinite friend of the Berrigans.
