I fear that is what happens when there is a large body of water to the 
West, namely the Pacific or Atlantic Ocean.  In the winter it tends to 
be bright and cold or overcast and less cold.  (In the caril Good King 
Wenceslas you would expect a cruel frost if the moon was bright.)

Roger, from Further North than most (all apart from some in the UK?) of 
you at 52 degrees North.
