[Magdalen] 224th Convention of The Episcopal Church in SC

another quote from the article:
"Justice requires that you listen to me," Tengatenga noted, characterizing
U.S. attitudes. To some, especially in post-colonial Africa, this sounded a
lot like that old superiority and arrogance. "It was viewed as political and
secular values impinging on a religious discussion."

And it sparked a backlash.

"Why is it you want to impose your understanding of the world on us?" some
Africans asked, according to Tengatenga, especially when "it's not true that
everything in the West is hunky-dory."

And this is where Tengatenga sits, in the midst of Anglican dissonance,
listening carefully and trying to form harmonious chords from the clashing
notes.

Yet for him, the dissonance is another reason for hope.

"This shows the church is actually alive, and it shows who we are,"
shortcomings and all, he said. "We become more of ourselves."
**************

This is a man of deep faith and wisdom. This is not one of the African
bishops who 'puffed up' when used by those in the 'American' Episcopal
Church to advance their own ends. This is also a man who calls out the
'western mind' (not just the U.S.) that they no longer occupy or can claim
'center stage' on the world stage in every affair of state or religion.
This strength, conviction and vision has been a long time coming. I, for
one, am pleased to hear the clarity with which he speaks about his position,
while being willing to help hold the center (the man made center, of
course), and allow diversity - which is what I love about his last sentence
above.

When I stand before God at the end of my life I would hope that I have not a
single bit of talent left and could say, "I used everything You gave me."
