Thanks, Sally, for promoting some discussion - I'd add that, in the 
meditation, I wrote:

"Maybe the symbol no longer works well. It certainly wasn't the ancient 
view. The King/Queen had the power of life and death, absolute authority and 
the final word in civil matters. Who cannot recall the Queen of Hearts in 
Alice in Wonderland and her often repeated, "Off with their heads."?
Jesus wasn't too keen on that model,

You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great 
ones are tyrants over them. It will not be so among you; but whoever wishes 
to be first among you must be your servant; just as the Son of man came not 
to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.

*Jesus changed the image of the symbol.
