The other day I posted this within a larger post:
>>>I came back to my desk and listened to my voicemail. One was from (after I'd figured it out) the old high school friend who'd broke my heart a couple years ago. That was, to put it mildly, another shock to the system. (More info later.)<<<
She is now living in Salinas, and two Sundays ago her would-be 5th husband died of police force PTSD (apparently a version that doesn't get much news coverage) complicated with alcoholism. She's a nurse, and is on leave this week in addition to last week, and for a variety of reasons isn't doing well. Her call to me on Friday was a reaching-out to what felt to her like her last friend. Though, as I jokingly say, she's related to a large segment of Salinas due to early parental divorce and multiple re-marriages with several children each time, she felt that in spite of our (by now) years of on-again off-again connectivity, I'm a decent enough fellow, with a deep enough childhood connection (we were born in the same maternity ward, just three weeks apart, and I grew up just two houses down from her paternal grandparents), to trust to still be a friend. I, indeed, am. A much wiser one by now, but one nonetheless. She's doing as well as can be imagined, with two adopted children (nieces), and various fiance family coming and going. Her two daughters and two grandchildren are in New England somewhere, and they of course want the Matriarch to come to live in their world. I fully expect her to. Unless the unexpected finally happens, and she decides to hang around Home Town and piddle around with weird ol' Mike. Hey, I can't be anything but honest. But the good news is that if (when) she decides to bolt, I'll be able to wave bye to her, while holding a sign that says "Don't Go!"
Hee hee.
But please pray. She isn't being allowed adequate grieving space, for sure. Thanks.
