Ginga, the "bluegrass mass" wasn't that complicated. We did happen to have
a musician who played for us on certain Sundays who was gifted with guitar
and banjo, but we had a couple of other guitarists including my late ex,
and I filled in on vocals and tambourine. The congregation knew all the
songs; I always said when we did that stuff we sounded like a bunch of
Baptists at camp meeting. We did "I'll Fly Away" and "I Saw the Light" as
well as "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms" and IIRC "Blessed Assurance"
which are not technically bluegrass but can sure be grassed up.
Sanctus/Benedictus were done to "Land of Rest" which is found in LEVAS. If
you have a congregation that likes to sing and knows these standards or
similar ones, and you have or can find the instrumentalists, you are good
to go. Bp. Charlie was definitely having a good time. I don't think he was
expecting it but then not much of anyone ever expected St. Barnabas in
those days.
