[Magdalen] gas prices?

How much of the clearance was due to the Scots and how much to English landlords, or Scottish landlords living in England?  Tree planting is happening South of the border as well, partly due to financial inducement as land is set aside from conventional agriculture.

Unfortunately, the Scots did a whale of a job in totally denuding  Scotland.
The trees were harvested, and not replanted, and the grassy vistas we
think of in Scotland are an example of bad husbandry of a natural
resource.

To be fair, there is a strong movement afoot in Scotland to replant  the
natural forest wherever possible.  Maybe we'll actually start seeing  real
forests of Scots Pine.
