My mother kept her NYS Drivers License for 15 years after she lost her sight 
with the help of an optometrist neighbor who'd sign off for her renewals, 
because few would recognize a state ID Card (same as a license but not 
authorized to drive).

But then my Dad found out that if the State knew she was blind, he could get 
handicap plates that would let him park in the blue spots in front of the Post 
Office and other location, so he turned it in in favor of an ID Card. She was 
furious, because the ID Card was NOT the same as a license. They didn’t speak to 
each other for two months (good thing my grandmother was there to take care of 
things). It also led to separate bedrooms (Dad moved downstairs).

And, of course, Mom was right -- after Dad died, Apple Bank refused to allow her 
to take any money out of her account because a NYS ID Card was not a drivers 
license. I had to have the lawyer do a durable POA -- and they let me take the 
entire amount out -- a bit over $100,000 -- based on a POA -- and a drivers 
license.
