and put that call in first thing.  Definitely do NOT offer any kind of help before USAA approve it because they will probably deny liability for anything you offer voluntarily. That is not about USAA specifically but standard insurance practics.

Definitely start with a call to USAA--they will have all those answers. 
I love that company! I've been with them since 1983 for all my insurance and added their Medicare supplement a year ago.
