My Scottish ancestors managed to stay Presbyterian somehow, and when they
moved to Kentucky and pretty much founded Mercer County, they established
New Providence Presbyterian Church, where my maternal grandparents were
married and which I believe perseveres to this day. My grandfather, his
son, his son's daughter, and her daughter have all been Presbyterian
elders. His daughters went other ways theologically. One married a Catholic
and had to convert, though she never took it horribly seriously (my Aunt
Mary didn't take a lot of things terribly seriously, only things that
*really* mattered to her), and the other was my mother, who became an
Episcopalian.
