[Magdalen] speaking of downsizing...Stuff it: Millennials nix their parents’ treasures - The Washington Post

I my Great Aunt Frieda found that none of her kids, grandkids, nieces and
nephews and their kids seemed to want any of the family-heirloom furniture when
she downsized from a house to an apartment.

She sent a letter to all of us making it clear we were only entitled to ONE item
from the house -- our choice -- but the rest would be discarded. The letter
described the family history of most all the items.

Faced with "only one piece" most everyone started putting in dibs, and in some
cases, fighting over the stuff they [suddenly] wanted stuff. I chose some
lovely Chinese prints, but never got them because one of the Michigan nephews
grabbed them first. By the time she was done, most everything was gone.

She was really pleased in the end as they mostly cleared her stuff, and was even
happy to have to buy a new dining table for the apartment!

Cheers,
Jim Guthrie
