Just read Wikipedia's article on the electoral college and found it quite
interesting, especially as it named a "faithless elector" who abstained as
a protest.>>>>>>
Back in the olden days, the statement, "Resolved that the Electoral
College be abolished, and that there be direct election of President",
was the debate subject nationwide for those participating in the
National Forensic League debate programs. It was a very memorable
year.
I was on an "affirmative" team (1951-1952), and we made it
down to Madison for the final rounds in UW-Madison Bascom Hall.
Just a few years later, that Hall was a central location for many of my
undergraduate college years.
Bascom Hall sits atop a steep hill, in those days lined by American Elm
trees, and just in front of the entrance is the Lincoln statue in bronze.
There is the pithy "legend" that he will "stand if a virgin passes by."
It's not specified whether this is a male or female virgin, but in any case
Lincoln doesn't seem to stand much.
