Full communion between Canada’s largest Protestant denomination, United Church of Christ

Canada’s largest Protestant denomination, the United Church of Canada, has entered into full communion with the United Church of Christ (UCC), a Cleveland-based denomination whose members include President Barack Obama.

The United Church of Canada was formed in 1925 from the merger of Presbyterian, Methodist, and Congregationalist denominations.

The UCC, formed in 1957 from the union of Congregationalist and Reformed bodies, once had over two million members, but membership now stands at 979,000.

Both bodies “share similarities on their passion for social justice and peace, inclusion of LGBT people and ordination of women,” the United Church of Christ said in a statement.
