You did right to try to identify the "guest" before you opened your home.

I've got peepholes in all my solid doors. I turn the light on and take a gander even if I think it's a friend. It's also good to call the police. The only "racial profiling" seems to be the cop's question to you.

(For future reference, burglars and home invaders don't knock on the door or ring the doorbell. They just break a window or force a door to let themselves in.)
