Our two cats haven't set us back too much. Two lessons we've learned so far:

1. Higher-quality, more expensive food is not really that much more
expensive because they are satisfied with lower quantities. They
needn't snarf up a whole bowl in minutes but pace themselves through
their 1/2 cup a day, as their Fromm brand food (from Mequon,
Wisconsin!) is giving them salmon and vegetables with nutrients they
need and a lot of flavor (and smell...whew...it's salmon, all right).
The corn-based food they were getting at the shelter was probably
about the same cost in the long run...cheap but they'll much it in
mass quantities. The better food has given them beautiful silky coats,
as well...good oils.

2. Vet bills have seemed a little on the high side but not horrible,
and we did spring for full dental treatment for our older cat, as
dental health helps prevent a bunch of other problems...like us big
cats, if you've got good choppers to eat properly, you'll be better
nourished. The younger cat should have her teeth done soon.

We do have pet insurance, which sometimes feels like a waste of money
but would pay out a reimbursement once for each illness/injury per
cat. Nothing's happened yet, but it's good to know we can recover some
of the cost when something is needed.
