For some reason, I'm on the mailing lists for a _bunch_ of charities.
Charities I've never heard of, much less ever given a cent to, send me
snail mail appeals monthly or even more often. Starting in August, a
lot of them send me calendars for the next year. They're too beautiful
(and also useful) to throw away, but I only need one or two out of the
many dozens. I usually pick Red Cloud Indian School (cute kids in
pow-wow dance regalia, done by a superb photographer--a Jesuit whose
hobby is photography packs up and travels many miles to take the
pictures on Dance Picture day, and the kids wear their finest), and
Clear Creek Abbey in Oklahoma (traditional Benedictine: all the
photographs look very medieval, except for the occasional one that has
something like a farm truck in them, but they do most of their work by
hand with old-fashioned tools and animals, not machinery). I haven't
bought a calendar for money in many years. The surplus dozens I take to
the Post Office and leave on the lobby desk, with permission from the
Postmaster (a cousin). They all go away quickly.
