I sometimes hear stories about priests who could say Mass in 17 minutes,
"amice to amice," so it includes vesting and final sacristy prayers. I
can't imagine how that could physically be done with the old 1928 rite,
especially enhanced by an old Missal like the American Missal.
Our beloved former bishop, +James Montgomery, is sometimes mentioned as a
fast Mass-sayer like that. These days (at age 90+), he's very fast giving
Communion (I've gone with him with the paten and holding his sleeve, and I
had to hustle to keep up) but quite normally paced with the prayers of the
liturgy. He swims every morning and walks to the Church of the Atonement
here in our neighborhood. And has an amazing memory, still. Long may he yet
live.
