When music consultant, Mason Martens died about 1989, there
were conflicting claims on his extensive, if esoteric, music library.
Much of the walls of his large, rent-controlled apartment at
82nd and Broadway in New York City were occupied by book cases,
and they were nearly all "double stacked" with an inner and an outer
row of books.
 
His favorite line was "I know I have some information about that
question, but I can't find it.  It's probably double booked  behind
some other books."
 
He had wished for the books to go to the Yale School of Music, his
Alma Mater, which was a logical scenario, but because he had an
ongoing dispute with the IRS, they also had a claim on his library.
 
How much all these music books were actually worth is debatable,
but it took over a year for them to be cataloged by specialists hired
by the IRS.
 
It appears that Mason's library ended up in the USA Library of  Congress
where they are available to music scholars.  I think Mason would  have
been happy with that.
