I recall when UK and Irish coins were the same shape and weight, as I

So are the coins from the various Scandinavian countries.
I recall innocently attempting to pass on Norwegian coins at the entry
to Copenhagen's famous Tivoli Gardens. The sharp ticket mistress,
super-sharp about such maneuvers, quickly rejected them with a
little scold. Apparently the Norwegian coins were of less value
than the comparable Danish coins.
OTOH, when I lived in Germany in the late 1960's, the German
Mark coin was exactly the same size as, and the same value as
the US 25 cent piece. There were other similar coin comparisons,
and it made shopping much easier. The Euro changed all that
for good.
