[Magdalen] Trouble for Twin Towers.

I knew the demolition of two large disused Roman Catholic church
structures locally (Wilkes-Barre, PA USA), each on its own
hill and both with high twin towers, was going to happen eventually.
Both these churches have "made" their neighborhoods, and it's
just hard to imagine them gone.
The first of these demolitions is now well underway, and the
previous rather striking view of that city from nearby I-81 will
be forever changed.
The news media are following the tumbling brick and stone
closely.
The first of these was a Lithuanian ethnic parish - among the
first targeted in the closing of 150 of 300 RC structures in this
county (Luzerne). The second, not yet facing the wrecking ball
was a general (Irish) parish that is just redundant and long closed.
So after the second twin-towered landmark goes, there will be
only one church visible from busy I-81 in Wilkes-Barre: an
Italianate domed church on the south side of town, and currently
to remain open.
In most other locales these churches would be gems, but here they
are simply tossed away and filled into a landfill.
It makes me sad.
David Strang.
