Once upon a time, a church was the only charitable demand on people, other than 
one-on-one help.

Nowadays, people contribute considerable amount of money to everything from the 
Red Cross and Cancer Society to the local Historical Society. But  yet churches 
are blind to the reality, leading many to have shortfalls which will only spiral 
as a result of only paying for clergy salaries and building upkeep. More people 
will help others through organizations that actually do ministry and outreach 
(even in a secular sense).
