This was the case for Saint Paul's on-the-Hill in Saint Paul, MN.

A couple of rectors there didn't seem to understand that if the
parish did not continue to offer something unusual in Minnesota
(Solemn High Masses), they would lose their far-flung constituency.

They dismantled the high altar and Tabernacle, and opted for
the free-standing versus populi like every other parish in
the region. Solemn High Masses were jettisoned.

The whole Diocese of Minnesota became Eucharist oriented
with the occasional use of smells and bells, and the appeal
of Saint Paul's disappeared.

The Parish was closed after Easter Sunday this year.
