Well, "American exceptionalism" is certainly popular - but that doesn't make
it right. After all, a majority of Americans don't believe in evolution,
either.
And, while most of the signers of the Declaration of Independence thought
Christian morals were a good thing, especially for the lower classes, many
(if not most) of them certainly couldn't be considered devout Christians.
George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin being examples
which immediately come to mind. In this way they weren't all that different
from their English brethren - which shouldn't be at all surprising. Thinking
they were all devout Christians is, IMHO, another example of deluded
American exceptionalism.
Those few who were devout Christians were, of course, all Protestants, and
would be sorely distressed if they knew of all the Roman Catholics who would
be arriving in the next 50-100 years.
