My dear elderly friend from Nova Scotia was always trying to
get me to bring back a bucket of lard. The real stuff, she said,
not that crap in the supermarket.

She was a stunningly good baker (of both sweet and savory
pies) and she lived into her nineties.

Once I asked for her recipe for chicken pie.
"You're not patient enough," she said.
And I'm sure she was right.
