The familiar calendar grid that ruled my life for nearly 30 years - the
official US Government Calendar - is gone. What I find is that one
day is just like the other, and holidays don't mean much to me anymore.
I have to work at it to keep track of the days of the week.
I developed my own vacation system centered on that Government
Calendar in that I routinely took an extra day with each official holiday.
This made for a lot of mini-vacations during the year. I would take
some extra days in the first weeks of July, as well, and it all worked out
very well until there was a change in Government policy. The USVA
had a military system by which if one took a Friday and a Monday, for
instance, the employee would be docked for 4 days vacation, not 2.
This system was disliked by many, and about ten years ago it was
changed so that only weekdays were charged. But as a sort of payback
for giving in, authorities reduced vacation days from 30 to 26. I would
have
preferred the older system, but "you can't fight city hall".
