The office derives from the daily prater of monasteries and other 
religious houses.  An abbreviated form is required of clergy to provide 
that link into the eternal cycle of the Church's prayer. Most Christians 
are not part of the clergy or a religious community.  The question is 
how to support them in their apostolate in the world.
