The Omaha Road still used steam engines (~'46-'53) on their daily Chicago
- Duluth
passenger run. The Detroit area boys who came up for the boys camp on
our lake always came via that route to Spooner, Wisconsin (where the
Twin Cities - Twin Ports Omaha tracks united for about 25 miles, and
therefore a real railroad town). I always road the bus over to help with
the
luggage for the 40 mile trip back over to their camp.
Omaha used large locomotives for this route, and it was a thrill to stand
on the deck of the Spooner Depot to see/hear/feel them come into the
station area.
That Spooner Depot was, fortunately, converted into a sort of railway
museum.
Omaha Road = Chicago and Northwestern Railway.
