Whatever happened to the days of showing a drivers license and crossing into
Canada otherwise un-impeded, rental car or not? (Returning, the US people always
harassed people about what they may have bought in Canada)
Some rental car companies want to know you're crossing the border before you do
it these days. And their GPS units let the home office know if you've violated
your agreement. Last few times I rented a car from Enterprise (2004-2006) they
actually wanted to know which states I planned to drive in, and specifically
prohibited Canada. I also purchased to CDW, as I knew my sight was getting
dodgy, and when I damaged a car (totaled one) I didn’t want to be bothered by
deductibles and hassles from the "free" ones offered by some credit card
issuers. Thus, even returning a car beyond repair was a simple trade for a new
car for the rest of the term of the rental.
[Albert prohibited me from driving after the last incident). I keep my license
for the same reason my mother did 15 years after she lost all sight. And I'll
reconsider if and when I ever have my Cornea Transplant. On the advice of my
Ophthalmologist, that will come when I am no longer able to see to function
normally on the theory that if there's a bad outcome (sight in only one eye now
so there's no going back) it won’t make much difference.
BTW, most rental agreements also specifically prohibit ANY crossing into Mexico.
Cheers,
Jim
