They're making money on it sure enough.  The question is whether or not 
it is worthwhile.  Financial institution this side of the pond are 
having to pay out for missold (in the sense that you did not need it or 
would not be able to claim on it) paymernt protection insurance. This 
has led to another group of "claims advisers" who solicit your claim to 
pass on to others to deal with and the financial institutions find it 
cheaper to settle rather than to contest dubious or ill-founded claims.
