Actually, Roger, the European teams are simply a bit more advanced, which
is why they qualified so many. The African and Latin American teams are
farther behind in their development. I was encouraged by the presence of
teams from Cameroon, Nigeria, and Cote d'Ivoire, and by the fact that
Cameroon got as far as they did. I note the rather significant absence of
teams from eastern Europe and, of course, the Arab countries. I'm a bit
surprised that the traditional powers in Latin American men's soccer lag so
far behind in the women's game.....particularly Argentina and Uruguay.
Colombia, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Brazil at least showed up and gave a
decent account of themselves.
