More or less what I was going to say - It's the water!

Big commercial beers (like Rolling Rock) tend to include "adulterants" 
besides the malted barley - e. g., rice, corn, etc. Makes them cheaper & not 
nearly as much flavor. Craft beers usually use malted barley primarily, with 
little else.

Obviously, you need to stick to Vermont beer. Hopefully Long Trail or some 
such can be had even in Scranton.
Vermont has the most breweries per capita of any state, so there are plenty 
to try out. One of the best, Hill Farmstead, is only a few miles from me.

I lived in Pittsburgh long enough to learn what they make Rolling Rock
out of.
In Vermont they probably use water.
