You are right to follow medical advice on this - hit any infection 
quickly and hard.  My mother had both hips replaced but when they did 
the second one infection set in and she had to have both removed.  As a 
result the top of her femur was held by muscles but was not capable of 
bearing any weight or the muscles doing anything useful.  For the last 
seven years of her life she was chair-bound needing to move her legs for 
her.
