It's funny to think that as I grow older, I now realise just how "mixed" Salinas was in my childhood and youth, with white and Latin-american being about equal in numbers, and with healthy doses of Japanese, Chinese, and Filipinos added for good measure.  Not many African-americans, though.  But today, with virtually no Asians or African-americans, and Latin-americans at 75%+ of the population (2010 census), "mixed" is simply not a term on the table.  But the level of tolerance and acceptance *I* feel from my Latin-american brethren, makes for a relatively pleasant norm.  If we could only get rid of the gang activity, though.
