I chanted the Exsultet once at Old Trinity. Singing/chanting is not my
gift. As one of my parishioners told me afterwards, I sounded like Beldar

Chanting runs counter to what is preferred of most singing in the
21st century. One needs to be careful not to inject too much
personal sound into it. IOW one needs to be careful not to sing
like a country-western singer, or on the other hand like a grand
opera star.
One also needs a good acoustic for chant, also. This is, no
surprise, a long, high space with a lot of hard, non-sound absorbent
surfaces. The latter is especially important. That's why singing
sounds better in the shower.
I had a lot of fun in Europe visiting the many remaining medieval
buildings. If there was no one about, I would try out the acoustics
in these churches by singing one of the familiar Ave Maria's or
the Salve Regina.
It was often amazing how people would come out of the woodwork
and listen, and even joint in these chants. They seem still to remember
them in Europe. It's a great way to meet natives.
David Strang.
