The French and the Germans are wild about it, especially in its
white form.  They carefully pile up the soil around the  sprouting
asparagus spears so there is no photosynthesis and no greening
of the chlorophyll.  The white variety is felt to be more tender,  and
commands a high price.
 
For me, I like asparagus, but don't find that much difference
between ordinary green asparagus and white asparagus.
