Well, the word is harder to pronounce, probably due to neurological wiring
issues.  Same thing goes for
February (Feb-yoo-wary instead of Feb-roo-airy),
and librarian (lye-bear-ee-an instead of lye-brair-ee-an).

Some things are harder to say than others.

I live in Dutchess County, and to the south lies Putnam (PUTT-n'm) County.
A lot of people who are fairly well educated always say Putman (PUTT-m'n)
County.  It's a lot easier to say. gliding from M to N is easy; gliding
from N to M, not so much.

People find things difficult to pronounce without stopping to form the word
manually, and in most situations, they simply don't go to manual override
and just say the easier pronunciation.
