Many TEC parishes omit the Gloria. Going back at least to our 1940 hymnal, there 
was a helpful list of hymns "For Use in Place of the Gloria." And the Low church 
folk used them because they regarded the Gloria as a Romish practice (even if 
placed at the Communion as it was <g>). Some of these parishes continued the 
practice -- opening hymn being the "Hymn of Praise" and then into the collect 
and lessons.

It also helps getting the Eucharist down to 45 minutes, which lots of parishes 
seem to like.
