More than that -- it reflects the notion that the bread has actually been 
transubstantiated into the body of Christ and had better not fall in the floor 
where people might trample on Jesus Himself, and would seem to deny the 
alternative notion of mere "Real Presence."

It should also be noted that "Standard Catholic Practice" without 
Transubstantiation smacks of merely playing church, I think.

I don’t think you'll get most Protestants to buy into either Transubstantiation 
or playing church. Heck, in TEC, we even have Prayer B, which certainly makes 
clear we're not believing in such.
